Frequently asked questions

What does buying off the plan mean?

You sign a contract to buy an apartment before it is built, usually paying a deposit now and the balance at settlement once the building is complete and titles are registered.

What is a sunset clause?

A contract date by which the development must be completed. If it is not met, the contract can usually be ended. Rules on how and when developers can rely on it differ between states.

Are there stamp duty concessions for off-the-plan apartments?

Several states offer concessions or exemptions for new or off-the-plan homes, with eligibility rules that change over time. Check the current rules with your state revenue office before signing.

What are body corporate or strata fees?

Regular levies paid by owners to maintain shared property such as lifts, pools and gardens. Buildings with more amenities usually have higher levies.
